the health care industry, and perhaps more so because of the impactful nature of that industry: virtually everyone depends upon health care to maintain a certain quality of life. For
that reason, health care policies and legislation have the capacity to impact huge numbers of stakeholders. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2003 is an example of such
a policy. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is the sweeping reform of the health care administration that was proposed and ultimately signed into law by the Obama administration
on March 23, 2010 ("Health", 2011). The law is intended to address several deficiencies in the United States health care system, most notably the growing population of uninsured citizens, the
rising costs of health care (spurred on by high insurance costs for both doctors and patients), and issues of equality of access. To achieve such a purpose, the law does
several things, including the creation of "state-based exchanges" where insurance coverage can be purchased at discounted rates, and where low-income individuals can receive subsidies to offset the cost of insurance
("Health", 2011). Additionally, large employers will now have to provide health insurance for employers or face stiff federal penalties, and the scope of Medicare will be expanded ("Health", 2011).
