Allina Health Systems based in Minneapolis reported that it is reducing staff through layoffs and attrition ("Lay-Off Report," 2007). Other layoffs are reported in a variety of areas in the
health care sector from pharmaceutical companies to research firms in New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, California and Minnesota ("Lay-Off Report," 2007). This method of downsizing is accomplished for different
reasons and the patterns seem to be related to reducing costs slightly due to the fact that the demand is just not there in respect to research and development. Many
companies do not want to lay off employees but when they realize that the bottom line is affected by keeping people on, management realizes that they must do what is
best for the organization as a whole. North Carolinian human resource managers in health care management should be cognizant of these trends as well as other trends in the overall
industry. In the example above, states in which pharmaceutical and research companies are laying off people are named, but none in the report cited any firms in North Carolina. Are
there similar firms in the state? One could surmise that perhaps there is an absence of this type of business, but this does not seem to be the case. In
examining a list of similar firms in the state of North Carolina one sees familiar names. Biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the state of North Carolina are Medtox Scientific,
