care" (DCAHEC, 2005). By the end of the 20th century, there was a dramatic shift from a medical care model to a health care model (DCAHEC, 2005). This concept expanded
to include a variety of health care professionals and non-professionals (DCAHEC, 2005). As the concept became more accepted, different names have been attached to it, such as multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and
collaborative (DCAHEC, 2005). Drinka proposed a systems model for interdisciplinary teamwork (DC Area Health Education Center, 2005). A systems approach creates a "fluid system" wherein roles and members of the
team change based on the patients needs (George Washington University, n.d.). The concept and practice inherently include shared decision making and continual communication among team members (DC Area Health Education
Center, 2005). The typical hierarchy that exists in medical and health care are eliminated (DC Area Health Education Center, 2005). The roles of each member of the team naturally change
when using a team approach, there is no single authority, rather, each persons expertise is used to better serve the patient (George Washington University, n.d.). there is a shared responsibility
among all team members (DC Area Health Education Center, 2005). Well-functioning effective teams do not happen by chance. It requires training in teamwork. Once the team is established, they must
first determine their goals, intervention strategies, monitoring progress and establish the channels of communication (DC Area Health Education Center, 2005). The roles of each member are determined in the planning
