two versions of this bill: H.R.3200, Americas Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, which was introduced to the House of Representatives on July 14, 2009 (H.R.3200, 2009) and the
Senate version of the bill, S.1796, Americas Healthy Future Act of 2009, which was introduced to the Senate on October 19, 2009 (S.1796, 2009). For the purposes of this paper,
the House bill, H.R.3200, will be examined; although, the version of the bill that may soon become law will be an agreed amalgamation of both bills. H.R.3200, Americas Affordable
Health Choice Act of 2009, stipulates provisions that would govern both health insurance plans and the practices of the issuers. First of all, it exempts "grandfathered health insurance coverage from
requirements of this Act," but it also prohibits health insurance providers from not covering pre-existing conditions (H.R.3200, 2009). The bill requires guaranteed coverage to "all individuals and employers and automatic
renewal of coverage," while also prohibiting variances in premiums, except to due to differences in "age, area or family enrollment" (H.R.3200, 2009). Under this bill, health insurance coverage cannot be
cancelled unless there is clear and sufficient evidence of fraud. According to Pomeroy, a social work scholar, H.R.3200 provides greatly needed benefits for "fragile children, high risk pregnant women,
nursing home residents, uninsured children and families, people with chronic illnesses...and other underserved groups" (Pomeroy, 2010, p. 5). The latest version of the bill includes a public option (Pomeroy, 2010).
The "public option" refers to the idea of the government running a health insurance program that, hopefully, will stimulate competition; however, while this feature is welcomed by many, some scholars
