will discuss the debate in Australia. People are also aware that health care is not as good as it could be, so the second subject of discussion is what kinds
of problems health care professionals have when they try to introduce quality care into the health care environment. Discussion Lets take the second subject first. It would seem blindingly obvious
that if theres one place where performance must be the best possible, it would be health care; mistakes can cost lives. But hospitals, doctors and other health care organizations also
are in business to make money, which means they are subject to the same pressures as other businesses. One of these is the pressure to save money and keep costs
down, which can be done by cutting salaries, cutting services, or perhaps reducing staff, leading to things like overworked employees. Health care is complex and because of that complexity,
errors occur. Accident investigators looking into medical mistakes have found that "most disasters in complex organizations had long incubation periods characterized by a number of discrete events, signaling danger, that
were overlooked or misinterpreted" (McLaughlin and Kaluzny 2006, p. 212). Some mistakes, such as deviance from standard hospital procedures, can be attributed to these types of situations; i.e., they occur
