not where the count is performed, they are not counted (NCH Fact Sheet #2, 2005). Persons forced to live with family members, for instance, are not counted nor are those
living temporarily in motels (NCH Fact Sheet #2, 2005). The best estimate comes from a study conducted by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, which stated "approximately
3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year" (NCH Fact Sheet #2, 2005). In 2003, it was estimated that children account
for 39 percent of the homeless population and 42 percent of those children are under the age of five (NCH Fact Sheet #3, 2005). In terms of single homeless individuals,
about 41 percent are male (NCH Fact Sheet #3, 2005). Another study found that 40 percent of the homeless population are families with children (NCH Fact Sheet #3, 2005).
These data relate to urban areas, the number is estimated to be much higher in rural areas (NCH Fact Sheet #3, 2005). The rates of both acute and chronic health
problems "are extremely high among the homeless population" (NCH Fact Sheet #8, 2005). In fact, homeless persons are far more likely to suffer from all categories of illness
and health problems with the exceptions of cancer, strokes and obesity (NCH Fact Sheet #8, 2005). Obviously, chronic problems that require ongoing and regular treatment are not treated (NCH Fact
