ambience, health care, and education incomes are available and open to all" (Minsky 364). These were the words of economist Hyman P. Minsky in his acceptance of the Veblen-Commons Award,
an award given to noteworthy economists. Veblen believed that the maintenance of life, was not simply a matter of "individual survival, but a case of the preservation of the
human race" (Stabile 692). He also was the first to state that societys view had turned away from sustenance to the pursuit of profit, and that this was not
an acceptable "ulterior end" (Stabile 685). However, this view is not shared by the politicians we have elected. As citizens, we have stated that we are unwilling to give
up more of our wages to support the human race, and for this reason, it has become necessary for governmental officials to devise ways in which to provide health care
to everyone without increasing taxes or cutting other programs, but is it viable? Health care came to the fore in the first year of President Clintons presidency. The
debate began when he introduced a health care entitlement program that was quickly exposed as unsupportable because of the governments history with Medicare and Medicaid. "In 1960, there were 17
million people age 65 and over. In 1995, there are approximately 31 million people age 65 and over, and by the year 2020 there may be as many as 53
