in hospitals or nursing homes. Nurse entrepreneurship "dates back to the turn of the 20th century" and represents a more personalized approach to the practice, wherein nurses travel directly to
the homes of their patients, spending devoted time with each and every client, and offering his or her services on the basis of an independent contractor (Fulton & Lyon, 2009,
p. 313). Until the 20th century, when hospitals become more commonplace and more universally trusted by the general population, this was the primary method of working as a nurse (Fulton
& Lyon, 2009, p. 313). With todays health care industry in such disarray, many nurses are turning back towards the opportunities offered by an entrepreneurial approach to the profession.
Evaluating the Opportunity The opportunity for nurses to work as entrepreneurs is considerable in todays health care environment. This is because the benefits offered by working in hospitals
or nursing homes have begun to erode, and the constant restructuring of health care for the sake of profit has led to most nurses being dissatisfied with the reality of
working in conditions that threaten the safety of patients, and the quality of care that they can deliver. Many environmental variables make this an opportune time to branch out. For
instance, the population in the United States is increasingly aging; people are living longer and longer. This means that there are increasing demands on health care systems, and those systems
