As Monica is described, she is totally lacking in energy. She zones out in class, stares at her homework but doesnt actually do it, and falls asleep in
her clothes. She is apparently in a state of permanent exhaustion. Its been suggested that she undertake an exercise plan and one has been designed for her.
Now someone has to prove to her that exercise can actually help her; in addition she needs to make other changes in her routine. The first thing she needs is
a complete physical exam to rule out some other cause (mononucleosis, anemia) as a cause for her fatigue. Assuming that shes okay, then she can begin her exercise program.
However, the excessive fatigue is unusual in someone so young, so we may have to consider another possibility: depression. Among the symptoms of clinical depression are
fatigue, inability to concentrate, and boredom, all of them lasting for weeks or months. Since this profile fits Monica, it might be wise to consider whether or not she
is suffering from this disease. Treatment for depression can include therapy and mood-elevating drugs, but it can also include exercise. Lets see what it is about exercise that
improves mood. There has been some controversy, apparently, about whether or not exercise really improves mood; but now a recent study has found that "an exercise program was equal in
benefit to routine doses of Zoloft, a common antidepressant" (Exercise and mood: not the usual rap, 2005). After months, both the exercise program and the Zoloft were tapered off
