of injury and relate to the repair process and timescale of fracture healing," including indications of what complications could occur and where any such complications are likely to arise. Early
Stages Some types of fracture of the tibia and fibula can be difficult to diagnose, but a transverse fracture of both bones should
be quite obvious even to the untrained. Still, the physician will review the injury and symptoms as a matter of course. In the meantime, the leg should be
immobilized immediately after the accident until the patient can gain medical attention extending beyond simple first aid. This is to prevent the broken ends of the bones from puncturing
the skin if they have not already, and to prevent damage to the nerves and blood vessels in the vicinity of the fractures.
The attending physician will examine the foot for signs of damage to the nerves and blood vessels in the vicinity of the fractures, and s/he also will examine the knee
because many bone-breaking accidents also can involve damage to the knee. The leg will be X-rayed both for diagnosis and confirmation. The
physician will set the leg by properly positioning the broken ends of the bones so that they can heal properly. The leg then will be immobilized for the term
