they cause. Discussion There are several types of headache: tension headaches are the ones that most people get from time to time, usually brought on by stress; there are sinus
headaches; cluster headaches and finally migraine headaches. Migraines have two major subtypes: "Migraine with aura is characterized primarily by the focal neurologic symptoms that usually precede and sometimes accompany the
headache" (Taylor et al, 2004, p. S-3). Some people with migraine experience a "premonitory phase" that occurs days or even weeks before the headache itself; and a "resolution phase" (Taylor
et al, 2004, p. S-3). Symptoms occurring during these phases may include cravings for particular foods, yawning and depression (Taylor et al, 2004). Attacks of migraine without aura ("aura" refers
to the fact that many sufferers experience a visual disturbance before the headache itself) usually last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours (Taylor et al, 2004). Typical characteristics of this
headache are "unilateral location, pulsating quality, moderate or severe Intensity, aggravation by routine physical activity, and association with nausea, photophobia [sensitivity to light] or phonophobia [sensitivity to sound] (Taylor et
al, 2004, p. S-3). A condition called "chronic daily migraine headache" is characterized by "15 or more headache days per month," a pattern that could be severely disabling (Taylor et
al, 2004, p. S-3). The differences between a migraine and a tension headache are as follows: the tension headache is usually bilateral, whereas the migraine is unilateral; the tension headache
is "pressing, or tightening in quality" whereas the migraine is pulsating; and the tension headache is not nearly as severe (Taylor et al, 2004, p. S-3). In addition, with the
