Fall of 1997, both Krueger and Oja pledged fraternities at prestigious colleges and both died as a result of alcohol poisoning that resulted from fraternity hazing (Allan, 2001).
Unfortunately, these events are not the only ones of their kind, and even after fraternity hazing was blamed for the resulting deaths, fraternities continue to participate in these rituals.
Critics of hazing on college campuses argue that the emotional and social pressures placed on influential freshman can result in choices that can end in death. It is
not unusual for fraternities to participate in hazing activities that are demeaning, that include the use of drugs or alcohol and that demonstrate a hierarchical structure to the fraternity that
pushes young people to participate in hazing or be forced into exclusion. Supporters of hazing activities have argued the opposite; that hazing activities are relatively harmless, that problems or
resulting deaths happen only in extreme cases, and that the rituals are a "rite of passage." Understanding the perspectives on both sides of this difficult issue provides a basis
for supporting arguments against hazing on college campuses. The problem of hazing is on the rise and occurs even on college campuses that have attempted to quell the problem through
the introduction of stricter alcohol and drug policies. Current statistics suggest that more than 50 people have been killed in hazing incidences, and that others are injured or emotionally
scarred from their experiences when attempting to pledge a fraternity. Unfortunately, these kinds of incidences often go unnoticed or underreported until a student dies from a hazing incident, at
