by the name that settlers gave to the Hudson River Valley many years ago, Worlds End. The title of his novel gives one an idea of what the book is
going to be about, if in fact they had heard the term before. The Hudson River Valley had been referred to as Worlds End and it is rather curious. In
any event, while the region has been home to many famous people, and a place where legends have originated, it is also one that is somewhat prestigious. One can also
look downstream to see that the Hudson River view has always been symbolic of wealth. From its inception, New York grew slowly but surely. Homes were built.
Many large homes still exist on the Hudson River today. Some of these houses belonged to early Dutch entrepreneurs, very wealthy men who hoped to increase their fortunes (Berman, 1994).
The river, which was the major route between Albany and New York, was a most likely place to settle, and these individuals chose the east bank which was prettier to
look at (1994). Many of these homes are quite lavish. It should be kept in mind that all this occurred before the birth of the United States of America.
New York City participated in the American Revolution and shortly thereafter experienced a financial boom. The late 1780s was a period of much growth. New York continued its successful pattern
of development. While New York City grew, the Hudson River Valley would retain its natural beauty. Yet, as decades passed, the quality of
the waters had become problematic. The beautiful Hudson River, where people built homes, had become polluted. The problem persisted largely through the 1970s when clean up efforts began. Some progress
