the year 2001, there had been reportedly 40.82 million tons of "RCRA hazardous waste (hazwaste)" that had been created (2004). The statistics cited come from the EPA. The author
then names states that had generated the most waste; as it turns out, Texas actually created the most with New York in third place (2004). Other states are named as
well. While a powerful point is made, it may also be noted that the amount of hazardous waste generated is meaningless to most people out of context. What was
it last year or the year before? If the amount of hazardous waste is simply a certain amount, it does not have meaning unless it is compared with other statistics.
At the same time, everyone knows what a ton is and to have that many millions of tons of anything objectionable, is rather extraordinary. For instance, there is the suggestion
that only a certain amount of rat hair is allowed by law to make its way into a candy bar; one comedian claims that even one hair is too much.
The statement was made in jest, but truthfully, people do not want any rat hair in their food. Similarly, any hazardous waste seems to be too much to the general
public. While this article is not published in a popular magazine for the average consumer, the article is written in such a way as to reach a vast audience. It
is also simple and comprehensible and does not use jargon or difficult concepts. The article goes on to explore definitions. It is noted that hazardous waste may be one of
