At the beginning of Hawthornes story Brown is a very simplistic and idealistic man who seems to have no doubts about what he is doing and where he is going.
He is a simple Puritan man, yet the reader is unsure of where he is going and what exactly he is doing on this particular evening. The reader does, however,
get the impression that he is something of a simpleton in his faith and his mission, whatever that mission may be. He is parting from his wife, who is seen
as a simple young woman with pink ribbons in her hair. The narrator tells us: "Poor little Faith! thought he, for his heart smote him...shes a blessed angel on earth...With
this excellent resolve for the future, Goodman Brown felt himself justified in making more haste on his present evil purpose" (Hawthorne). He makes
his way down the "dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through" and imagines that there
could "be a devilish Indian behind every tree" or that the devil may even be in the woods (Hawthorne). As one can see, the nature of his journey is unknown
but there is a powerful simplicity about him, a deeply seeded fear of all that is evil, or perhaps even a fear of the simple nature of the world that
