character of Hester, Hawthorne illustrates the struggle to achieve righteousness in a society that itself contributes to the inability to maintain such standards.
Hester Prynne is a unique character in that she is entirely ordinary. She is us, in that what happened to her could happen to anyone. She wasnt
a "tramp" or a dreg of society, but rather just a lonely woman who made one bad decision that haunted her for the rest of her life. She was
married but her husband had been away for a very long time. She was lonely, and in this way ended up having a sexual relationship with Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale.
She becomes pregnant and then is jailed for her crime. But Hester is a strong woman, and from the very moment that
she is forced to face the town at the beginning of the story, she realizes that this is something she will face alone. She has affection for her husband
and her lover, but she knows that her future is now her own, and that she alone will have to pay for what has happened. In this way, she
doesnt blame nor does she come to resent either her husband or the reverend, but instead she reveals an extraordinary amount of courage in being able to face this difficulty
with only her daughter at hand. It is interesting to note how Hester goes through quite a radical transformation once she
is banished by the community and has to live in near-seclusion with her daughter. She comes to be very independent and to question many of the ideas of the
