time. However, his works also contain deeper, perhaps more subtle, themes which are reminiscent of Biblical myths and Greek or Roman myths. AS one author states, "Nathaniel Hawthorne in particular
succeeded in setting his stories in a dream-like realm in which the historical past acquires a mythical dimension. Some of his stories read like straightforward parables" (Heim lecture10.htm). Two stories
which are often ignored in terms of such thematic content are "Roger Malvins Burial" and "The Artist of the Beautiful." In the following paper we examine each story separately, discussing
how they present us with various themes which relate to Christian myth and/or Greek or Roman myth. Roger Malvins Burial In this simple, yet complex, tale of a mans
promise and his need to keep that promise we are provided with a theme that is perhaps timeless. One classic myth which seems to connect with this short story is
that of Oedipus in relationship to father and son and the sins that will come back to haunt an individual. Running from a prophecy, or a promise, will often lead
to the destruction of the one who avoided an honorable path. In the story of Oedipus we see that rather than find the truth, in the first phase of his
journey, he prefers to run from the prophecy. He thinks he is doing the right thing, much like Ruebens belief that he is doing the right thing in the initial
promise to Roger. But, the two men flee from the reality they face, running from truth. Because they both run from this truth they are seriously damaged in the end
for as honorable men they should have faced the reality and stood with integrity. In another ancient myth we find many stories relating to the character that is Achilles.
