information on using this paper properly! Introduction Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in an intriguing place in an intriguing time, conditions which served to offer him material for writing. He
was born in 1804 on the 4th of July and was born in the town of Salem, Massachusetts (Cogswell, 2001). He was a man of his times in that he
felt a deep connection with nature while also maintaining a fascination with the growing field of science and technology. From a young age he was intrigued with writing as he
had suffered an injury that would leave him lame and unable to perform physically like most children. As mentioned, his time and place in history served to offer him a
great deal of material for writing, and in his writing, primarily his tales and sketches, we gain a powerful understanding of his perspectives concerning nature and science. In the following
paper we examine his perspective on science as derived from an analysis of his work. It should be noted that the student requested "Selected Tales and Sketches," a book
unavailable to this writer. As such, the paper focuses on the general work of Hawthorne, with emphasis on his tales and sketches. The information, however, should prove sufficient for further
investigation on the part of the student. Tales and Sketches: Science Prior to examining particular texts or stories, we must illustrate that Hawthorne was considered to be one
of the most influential writers who followed the ideal of Romanticism Era. It was a time when authors looked back in the past and tried to offer stories which described
