SA142Haw.rtf Nathaniel Hawthornes short story entitled "Dr. Heideggers Experiment" features Dr. Heidegger of course, but it also includes some of his friends. There are four others, one of whom is a female. All of them-with the exception of the doctor-- take a potion that restores their youth, or at least physical youth. What happens is that these once elderly people become not only youthful, but also vibrant. When the four return to their former selves, they find that they are once again interested in the opposite sex. Being that one of the aged is a female, the three others-- Mr. Medbourne, Colonel Killigrew, and Mr. Gascoigne-- fight for her attention. But the potion wears off, and soon the friends feel silly. This story is similar to the ones that place characters in extreme positions. Rod Serling liked to do this sort of thing and in one Twilight Zone story demonstrated that friends and neighbors would turn selfish if everyone needed a bomb shelter. Hawthornes tale is similar, but it gets deeper into the psyche of the characters. Each character in the story has their own agenda. Medbourne was once successful but had lost his money and Killigrew had given in to a few vices which had created a situation where he was sickly. Gascoigne was a politician at one time but his career had been ruined. In each way, the men were guilty of certain sins, but they also seemed to have unfortunate things happen to them. Each was a life that was seemingly immobilized by either events or their own doing. In either case, the experiment would provide these three elderly gentlemen, who ...
