After the emphasis on reason that was so intrinsic to the previous age, romantics such as Nathaniel Hawthorne placed emphasis on the emotional quality of their writing and relied on appeals to the imagination as a rationale for the reader accepting the often improbable nature of romantic plots (Reuben). These romantic qualities are clearly evident in two of Hawthornes short stories, "Young Goodman Brown" and "The Ministers Black Veil." In "Young Goodman Brown," Hawthorne pictures a young, newly-married man set off on a journey for an unnamed purpose, advising his wife to "Say thy prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk and no harm will come to thee" (Hawthorne 1033). There is an ominous air to this exchange, as Faith begs her husband not to go. Hawthorne indicates that this makes the young man feel guilty and he vows that after this one night, he will "cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven," and with this resolve he hurries on his "evil purpose" (Hawthorne 1033). The young man soon finds himself on a dreary road in a dark wood. As this opening indicates, Hawthorne quickly establishes a ominous gothic tone, which is a feature of romanticism. Goodman Brown soon arrives at his destination as he meet a man who has been waiting for him. The man rises and advises him that he is late. "Faith kept me back a while" says Goodman Brown (Hawthorne 1034). As the man is the Devil himself, this statement has symbolic, as well as literal meaning, as his faith in God, as well as his wife, may well have slowed his steps.
