is one that has been influenced by many forces, such as that of the west and capitalism, changing the natural agriculture and then increased globalization along with the increased competition
and then action of the unions in already difficult conditions creating the need for closures in many industries which in turn has increased the importance of tourism.
Hawaii is part of the Polynesian island, and was one of the last to be settled. The first settlers appear to have arrived from the
Marquesas and settled between 500 and 600 AD. The life was peaceful, and stayed this way until between 1000 and 1100 AD when the Tahitians arrived with another migration. It
was the Tahitians that introduced the strict social orders and gradually absorbed the original settlers into their society (SHG, 2003). Modern history
begins in 1778 when Captain James Cook sailed to the islands (SHG, 2003). When he arrived he named the islands the Sandwich Islands after the Earl of Sandwich1 (SHG, 2003).
It was also Cook that brought an English sow and boar to the islands (SHG, 2003). When he first arrived the native Hawaiians believed him to be the Lono, the
god of peace and fertility. However, Cook was to die here as well, being stabbed in Kealakekau Bay. One of the witness to this stabbing is an important figure in
the history of Hawaii; King Kamehameha I otherwise known as Kamehameha the Great. This was the king who would later unify the Hawaiian Islands and started the Hawaiian monarchy (SHG,
