become very liberated in cyberspace. People, on the whole, do not like or appreciate hate speech and generally assume that hate speech is only the first step towards hate crimes
and acts of violence against particular groups. But, even with that in mind one must still ask if hate speech is something that should be banned from the Internet, or
something that should be protected as a form of free speech. The following paper examines hate speech and argues that allowing it is the best way to deal with it.
Hate Speech on the Internet First and foremost it should be understood that the United States is a nation that was
built on the freedom of speech. The nation is the most powerful nation in the world when it comes to the notion of free speech and the freedom of expression.
The people essentially have a right to state any opinion they have and to take that away is to limit freedom in the United States. Even in the UK the
idea is similar as stated by one who indicates that, "Libertys fundamental principle is that governments should be prohibited from prohibiting the expression of an idea simply because society finds
the idea itself offensive or disagreeable" (Cyber-Rights & Cyber-Liberties (UK), 2006). In essence, just because one person finds certain ideas or statements disagreeable does not mean the nation has a
right to remove those ideas or statements from the public view. In all honesty, there is a very "high risk of suppressing any speech" (Internet Resources on Hate Speech,
2006). When the government suppresses the people through their freedom of speech the government is only asking for trouble as the ideas become more subversive. If people, even simple individuals,
