charge of these types of prosecutions yet the degree to which they offices are equipped to deal with such prosecutions can vary dramatically. Phoenix Arizona is one city that
is on the cutting edge of hate/bias crime prosecution. That city has established a special prosecutorial unit for hate crimes. The members of that unit are kept abreast
of hate crime developments and are charged with prosecuting them in the most effective manner possible. No one questions the contention that hate/bias
crimes are more high profile today than they have been in the past. Unfortunately the events which are unfolding in our country today are those which have been targeted
against one race or ethnicity after another throughout American history. The criminal activity which is all too often associated with such mindset has been recently termed hate crimes.
The concept of hate crimes is, in fact, a concept which has only received its label in contemporary times (Human Rights Campaign, 2001). Although such crimes existed in the
conservative era as well there was not the degree of societal cognizance which exits today (Human Rights Campaign, 2001). As our awareness of hate/bias crimes has increased, so too
has the recognition that our prosecutorial arms must be prepared to adequately prosecute such crimes to the fullest extent of the law. Phoenix is one of several communities which
is making a diligent effort to do so. Phoenix prosecutors receive considerable training in the specifics of hate crime prosecution. This includes a number of workshops and conferences.
