all, there are fewer choices that come with these models but there is someone closely watching the pocketbook. With managed care, purchasers of health insurance believe that while they may
not have access to all health providers, they can at least be assured good health care at a reduced price. They trade a bit of quality for an economic benefit.
Consumers realize that this is what is occurring. HMOs do limit choice and this, to a small extent limits the quality of care. That said, the compromise in quality is
minute. People should not be left to die for example because some type of procedure was not approved. At the same time, there is a compromise made by the consumer
which is that while they are paying a reduced premium, they should save money. The system overall should be less costly. The question that looms today is, have HMOs really
saved the health care system any money? Has the HMO model helped to resolve the health care crisis? In order to address this issue, a look at the health
care crisis must be taken. The conventional wisdom has been to create managed care paradigms that would provide fewer choices but a wider array of coverage options so that all
patients would be treated well. In essence, while people cannot choose any doctor they like, and must be referred to specialists for example, they are well taken care of. They
have choices. Oxford for instance allows a wide array of benefits. With a smorgasbord of alternative therapy options from counseling to acupuncture to yoga, people feel protected. On the other
