Should power be handed down within the aristocracy? Should all voices be heard in a democracy? In the United States for example there is much pride taken in respect to
how the country is composed. It is created under a paradigm of equality, but the reality is not that at all. In fact, there has been much made of the
fact that the white upper crust still possess and creates most of the wealth and the idea that anyone can be president in the U.S. lingers but is slowly fading.
Affirmative action has risen to try to mend the problem, but many see that as only a band-aid. In nations around the world, there have been attempts at rendering democracy
a fair system of governance in different ways. The Netherlands today seems to be a good example of how a government should be run, at least by many accounts. Yet,
it had its share of problems but changed its mind in respect to how the nation would be run. Rather than being a haphazard democracy run by chance, the nation
would implement something new to render things more equitable. The Netherlands has embraced something called consociational, but while a success, some have claimed that this form of democracy has outlived
its usefulness. The question is, has it? If in fact there is something that can bridge gaps and create a situation where everyone is equal and happy, should it not
persist for the long haul? The question has been raised many times and in order to discern an answer, it helps to explore the Netherlands along with the concept of
