difficulty in realising the benefits of multiculturalism are indicating that in Australia at least, it is a failed experiment, and that minorities such as Muslims are victims of the failures.
To consider whether or not multiculturalism is a failed experiment the concept of multiculturalism and the way it has emerged, or fail to emerge in Australia needs to be considered.
The concept of multiculturalism is a volatile political issue, with interpretation being subjective in nature (Gollnick and Chinn, 2006). The term comes from Latin, with multus
meaning many and cultura meaning cultivation. So this is a term which refers to many different racial groups with their own cultures mixing together in a single nation ( Gollnick
and Chinn, 2006). Therefore it may be argued that the entire history of Australia makes it a multicultural nation, however the history of making a cultural society work in an
inclusive manner appears to be limited in the historical context. It may be argued that for a multicultural society to function there needs to be the cross cultural experiences,
this creates understanding and is more likely to result in cohesion, as fear is reduced and empathy is increased (Biltion et al, 2004). However, when looking at the cross cultural
experiences in Australia it is short sighted to look at the dominant culture as the principle culture and then at others which have subsequently entered, this undermines the indigenous peoples;
