is the worlds largest and most prestigious astrophysical institution. The CfA is described, in fact, as arguably being "the worlds largest center for astronomical research" (Harvard University Gazette, 1997).
Established in 1973, the CfA is comprised of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (Harvard University Gazette, 1997).
Located in Cambridge Massachusetts, the CfA also has numerous satellite facilities scattered around the world and, in fact, in space. Ground satellite observatories include the Fred Lawrence Whipple
Pbservatory, Magellan telescopes, MMT Observatory, South Pole Telescope, Submillimeter Array, 1.2 Meter Millimeter-Wave Telescope, and VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System). Space-based observatories include the Chandra X-Ray
Observatory, Hinode, Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. This institution has racked up over three decades of research in astronomy, astrophysics, earth and space sciences,
and science education. The purpose of this research is to better our understanding of the universe. Just one year after
it was founded, the CfA published the SAOs "Standard Earth III" (Harvard University Gazette, 1997). That same year it established the Womens Program and observed a second black hole
in Circinnus (Harvard University Gazette, 1997). In 1975 the center started its atmospheric ozone measurement program and initiated "Space for Women", a conference designed to explore science careers for
high school girls (Harvard University Gazette, 1997). Einsteins gravitational redshift theory was tested by the CfA with the use of rockets in 1976 (Harvard University Gazette, 1997). The
Einstein Observatory was launched in 1977, the Minor Planet Center moved to Cambridge in 1978, and lightening bolts were observed on the night side of Jupiter in 1979 (Harvard University
