Managers Job: Folklore and Fact." In this article, Mintzberg expertly separates the real from the assumed in regards to what actually constitutes the role of the manager. By demonstrating that
many of the assumptions that are made in business regarding the role of the manager are, as Mintzberg points out, "mythological" in nature, he challenges the traditional paradigms and opens
the readers perception to a fuller appreciation of what a manager is actually capable of doing within the scope of his or her authority. Having separate the "wheat"
from the "chaff" ?so to speak?Mintzberg proceeds to address the factor of leadership within the managers role. As inferred in Mintzbergs article, individuals have a tendency to cling to the
notion that they can force or manipulate others to fit their preconceived ideas and concepts. Mintzberg demonstrates that even when such tactics work?which is seldom and inefficiently--it does not constitute
good leadership practices. Rather then tactics of coercion or manipulation, Mintzberg demonstrates how true leadership works through a structured environment and modeled behavior on the part of the business managers.
