lose their power and meaning after a decade or so. And, still yet, some seem to transcend the generation gaps and present viewers with realities that are perhaps universal to
any particular age. Two such movies are "Harold and Maude" and "Blue Velvet." Each of these films offers something for a new generation, so much so that they have become
cult classics. In the following paper we examine the two films individually and then compare and discuss the relevancy of the films. Harold and Maude If we take
away the music and the cliches and news events that occur in this film, as they relate to the early 70s, we can readily see how this film is one
that addresses all coming of age youth. It is a story of dissatisfaction, a story of love, and a story of the ability to reaffirm the beauty of life. In
this story we have young Harold who is obviously unhappy with his life. He lives with an incredibly controlling mother, who is from a generation gone by. She does not
understand him, nor does she try to. She is nothing but a rich snob who feels that the answer to life lies in money, or in finding Harold a nice
young woman. Harold, however, is a young man fascinated with death. This is, of course, perhaps only something which defies his mother and which can confuse and irritate her.
It may well have nothing to do with funerals and death, but rather the shock factor that it provides for a young man who is doing battle with his mother.
