It manufactured its first small motorcycle, the Model D, in 1949. The company improved its technology for the bikes and continues to do so today. Honda entered the companys motorcycles in races beginning in 1959 and continues to compete. In 2004, Honda built their first prototype that is powered by a fuel cell and in 2007, it offered the first bike with an air bag (Motorcycle.com, 2009). Today, Honda is the largest motorcycle company in the world. In 1901, William Harley drew a blueprint of an engine that would fit on a bicycle (Harley Davidson, History, 2010). Two years later, Harley and Arthur Davidson, manufactured and sold their first motorcycle. It was built as a racer. In July 2004, Harley Davidson won their first race in Chicago (Harley Davidson, History, 2010). Growth was rapid after that. The company was incorporated in 1907 and they sold their first bike to a police department in Detroit in 1908. By 1917, half of all Harleys were made for the U.S. military (Harley Davidson, History, 2010). In 1969, Harley merged with American Machine and Foundry but Harley Davidson almost went under in 1981 (Harley Davidson, History, 2010). It continued on only because thirteen of its executives agreed to purchase the company (Harley Davidson, History, 2010).
