Furthermore, this story reflects many important Victorian values and in this way provides an excellent example of Victorian literature trends. The Three Strangers takes place in Wessex, and one of the highlights of this story is the ability of Hardy to so aptly describe the surroundings. But Hardy does not just describe the physical surroundings, but provides detailed explanations regarding the period, setting and characters as well. In this way, much of the success of this story is based upon the integration of the plot with these elements. The limited number of characters in this story and the single setting further serve to require this author to depend upon his abilities to tell his story through detailed explanations of a variety of elements outside of the characters themselves. This is a grim but humorous story, and in this regard the reader is able to evidence the satirical genius of this author. Furthermore, Hardy employs the use of a narrator who is entirely familiar with the surroundings and is able to relate this information to the reader in an entertaining and forthright manner. The characters that are portrayed in this story range from shepherds to artisans, and in this way Hardy stays true to the types of characters that would have populated the landscape that he so aptly describes. Additionally, the imagery that Hardy uses serves to further enrich the surroundings of the characters. The reader is able to "see" the humble home of the shepherd and through the rich imagery provided is also able to understand the interconnectedness of the characters to their environment. ...
