makes sense. If people use reason to make decisions, as opposed to acting on impulse or for pure indulgence, they can be happy, at least according to modern logic. Happiness
today seems to be equated not with fleeting elements of pleasure, as those are often seen as evil or overindulgent, but rather to doing the right thing. In other words,
people are thought to be happy if they have achieved much in life, lived by a high standard and so forth. Indulging in sex or drugs for example is frowned
on and instead, the key to happiness comes in other forms. Reasoning, and making good decisions then, may be the key to happiness. On the surface, it makes sense. On
the other hand, there are many people in society who do act according to reason and are not happy. Someone may get married to an individual who is seemingly perfect.
The individual may have a good job and is a good parent, but in the end, there may be no physical attraction. There had been good reasoning ability applied
to the marital decision but again, in the end, there was no happiness realized. Yet, Aristotle was a thoughtful philosopher who did not make rash judgments. Also, there could very
well be exceptions to this happiness rule. Why did Aristotle believe that reason is equated with happiness? In order to understand Aristotle and his idea in this realm, it
is important to explore Nicomachean Ethics. Regarding happiness, Aristotle has a very sophisticated definition. He says: "Verbally there is very general agreement; for both the general run of men and
