unconsciously-is to maximize his or her happiness" (Eaton, 2001, p. 56). However, the factors that different people consider essential to their happiness varies with the person. Hedonistic people feel
that they cannot be happy without pleasurable experiences that feed the senses and a huge amount of material possessions. More spiritually advanced people derive happiness from study, contemplation and helping
others. Referring to "rights and freedoms" in American society typically alludes to the values incorporated into the US Constitution and the "right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"
(Starr, 2007, p. 34). It is important to note that this famous sentiment does not guarantee happiness, but rather proposes that every American has the right to pursue their own
personal perception of happiness, which is a factor that addresses the fact that everyone is different and has their own ideas on this subject. In order for any human
society to succeed, people have to give up some degree of their personal freedom. One cannot simply take whatever wants or feels they need to be happy. If caveman Og
