enjoyment and also a tale that can be interpreted and analyzed in many respects. The following paper analyzes elements of the classic Brothers Grimm story. Hansel and Gretel
One of the elements that can be examined is that of setting. Clearly the story involves a family who lives in the woods, and thus are not wealthy or important
people. They are common people who live off of the forest as they cut wood. In this wood, presumably a very large wood, there are many mysteries it would seem
for not only do the family live in the woods but also a wicked witch. There is no indication that the children or the family have ever heard of this
wicked witch in the woods and this further illustrates the vast enormity of the forest in which the story takes place. One could analyze this and claim that the symbolic
nature of the woods was connected to the primal existence of humanity, or how humans, despite civilization, are still primal in their actions as seen through the fact that the
father agrees to leave his children in the woods to die because they are all hungry. The dark and ethereal setting of the story is very reflective of the dark
nature of humanity. As it involves the tone of the story there is the powerful understanding that the father is a kind man, although also a weak man who
does what his wife tells him. He is not a strong man in terms of being a hero or in being true to his children. This is in contrast to
