diverse African American family who ultimately want nothing more than most people want in relationship to a financial stability and a home. In essence, they are desiring the American dream,
but yet they are African Americans and as such the American dream is not as readily available to them because of their race. The following paper examines the characters dreams,
their obstacles, and the appeal of their dreams. Hansberrys A Raisin in the Sun: Dreams In Hansberrys story there is Mama,
Walter her son, and Beneatha her daughter. There is also Walters wife Ruth and son Travis, but they realize they have no say in the matter and their dreams are
not necessarily a big concern in the story. They generally only serve as support for one or another individual at one moment or another, supporting their dreams or not. As
such the characters that will be discussed are Mama, Walter, and Beneath. The Youngers, or more accurately Mama, will be receiving an
insurance policy worth thousands of dollars and this money urges the characters to dream even more realistically about what it is they want in life. While they have likely been
dreaming all their lives for one thing or another the arrival of the insurance money is something that makes the possibility of achieving a dream a real possibility rather than
just a dream. At the same time it is also important to understand that where their dreams are concerned, the ultimate control over the money and what is done with
