Hans Memling or Memlinc (c1430-1494), was a German-born Flemish religious and portrait painter whose artwork is thought to offer a definitive representation of the period most often referred to in art history as the "Late Gothic." In general, Memling is best-known for his altar pieces and delicate depictions of madonnas. The Italian painter and architect Raphael Santi or Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520) was only a child when Memling died. Referred to throughout the centuries simply as "Raphael," his work has come to be viewed as some of the finest examples of the clarity, harmony, and balance of the art of the High Renaissance. "Virgin and Child with Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara" Memlings "Virgin and Child with Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara" was painted in 1479 and is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
