art was conceptualized as an endeavor take the problem of how to regard aesthetics and reinterpret this issue in terms of how to experience art.2
This examination of Truth and Method will consider, specifically, questions relevant to aesthetics, such as: What is beauty? Is beauty timeless and universally or culturally and ideologically
determined? Whether or not beauty is transcendent and necessarily different from everyday experiences of pleasure will also be examined, using Gadamers philosophy, and the topic of how art should be
judged will also be discussed. First of all, the historical context, in which Gadamers philosophy can be understood, is addressed. Arguably, the most important and significant development to take place
in recent centuries has been the advent and continuing dominance of science and the subsequent effects that this historical event has had on the epistemology of knowledge.3 These effects have
been so profound that they have been felt in all areas of knowledge, including the humanities, as even the social sciences, as well as the humanities, have felt pressure to
adopt the methodology of science in order have their goals perceived by their fellow scholars and intellectuals as respectable.4 However, Gadamer, in Truth and Method, challenges this understanding, as Gadamer
argues that in order to formulate an interpretation, that is, an understanding, of any text, production or work of art that is authentic, the reader/viewer must keep an open mind,
