He ran away from home at fourteen and journeyed to Copenhagen in order to pursue this dream. In 1827, Jonas Collins, a director at the Royal Theatre, obtained a grant that allowed Andersen to attend school (Hans Christian Andersen). In 1835, Andersen published his first short stories and his literary career was launched (Eitelgeorge and Anderson 37). Andersens work was innovative as he "broke new ground in both style and content, using language in a manner that had not been previously seen in Danish literature (Hans Christian Andersen). His identification with the unfortunate and downtrodden made his stories emotionally compelling (Hans Christian Andersen). Different aspects of Andersens own life can be seen in his stories. For example, Andersen had an unrequited love for the Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, whom he met in 1840 (Hans Christian Andersen). Andersens story "The Nightingale" is believed to be a tribute to Jenny Lind, who was known as the "Swedish Nightingale" (Hans Christian Andersen). Like "The Emperors New Clothes," "The Nightingale" addresses themes of pretense and hypocrisy as well as what constitutes beauty and real values. Andersen begins by describing the elaborate, beautiful and impractical nature of the Chinese Emperors palace, which is so delicate that you could touch it only with the greatest of care" (Andersen). With this introduction, Andersen establishes that the Emperors love of beauty is integrally entwined with ostentation. For example, the flowers in the garden are outfitted with tinkling bells to attract attention.
