was stationed in a home requisitioned for the Armys use, which was owned by Major Hugh Edward E. Peel, who purchased the house in 1938, but had never actually lived
in it. On August 21, 1940, Hannah was in a bedroom adjusting the "black out curtains" when his hand touched something that was on top of the window frame (Hannah
v. Peel). The article that Hannah found turned out to be a brooch, which was covered in cobwebs and dust, suggesting that it had been stuck in the crevice
above the window for quite some time. Hannahs wife evaluated the brooch as possibly valuable. On her advise, the corporal informed his commanding officer who advised him to turn
it over to the police. Hannah followed this advice, turned it over and received a receipt for the brooch. However, when the true owners of the brooch could
not be found, the police returned the brooch, not to Hannah, but to Peel, as the owner of the property. Peel subsequently sold the brooch in London for 66 pounds
and it was resold by the firm that purchased it for 88 pounds. There was absolutely no indication in the case that Peel had any knowledge of the brooch prior
to Hannahs discovery of it, as he had purchased the house just two years prior to the discovery and never lived in it. Peel offered Hannah a reward for finding
the brooch, but Hannah refused it, maintaining his "right to the possession of the brooch as against all persons other than the owner, who was unknown" (Hannah v. Peel). Hannah
subsequently sued Peel for the return of the brooch or its value. Procedural History: There is no procedural history given in the court document concerning this case. Question
