Shakespearean play that has been analyzed a great deal. One area of focus is on the character of Hamlet himself and how he is searching for his true identity. A
student writing on this subject may want to point out that Hamlet is representative of all men. In other words, he is a symbol of something greater than himself. The
larger question becomes, how does man search for his true identity? Much of the way in which the character Hamlet represents this is through his soliloquies or long speeches. One
can see that Hamlet exaggerates and makes life worse by doing so. In Act I Scene II, Hamlet says: "O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, Thaw, and
resolve into a dew! Or that the Everlasting had not fixd. His canon gainst self-slaughter! O God! God!" (Shakespeare 103). This soliloquy begins on a rather sad and angry note
and ends just the same as the character explains his distaste for the fact that his mother is sleeping with his uncle. Here, a student will want to examine the
fact that this protagonist seems to have an identity through his blood. He seeks revenge, but he also seeks to find out who he is by identifying with his deceased
father. Many people, as they get older, realize that their identity lies in a heritage. It is through exploring familial roots, and even getting to know their parents better, that
allows them to find out who they really are. Hamlet has lost his father, but he continues to explore his own life in this manner. At the end of this
