or another. One type of hero is the tragic hero. The tragic hero, as we shall see, is a hero we can sympathize with and relate to. In the following
paper we detail Aristotles notion of the tragic hero, and then discuss the story of Hamlet and that of King Richard II and then argue that Hamlet, by far, fits
the definition of tragic hero as presented by Aristotle. (It should be noted that the student did not specify whether the paper should address King Richard II or King Richard
III so this particular writer chose to focus on King Richard II. It should also be noted that both King Richards would not fit the definition of tragic hero as
much as Hamlet.) Tragic Hero In Aristotles "Poetics" we are provided with many descriptions concerning what it is that makes a tragic hero. He generally defines the tragic hero
or heroine as a relatively noble individual. They are also clearly human individuals who incite our empathy and sympathy. they are people caught in incredible circumstances which often instill in
the viewer, or reader, a sense of understanding for their plight. This understanding, sympathy, and/or empathy is the result of their failings which we, the reader or viewer, can relate
to. We see them as noble individuals who demonstrate weakness, yet still battle against all odds to remain honorable and noble. It is believed, according to Aristotle, that the root
cause of the fall to ill fortune is the characters Hamartia, which can be defined as a tragic flaw in their character and/or a tragic flaw in their judgement.
Hamlet Hamlet is a man of high social standing, and thus able to fall from great heights. He is also a man of great noble ideals, another quality that
