suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Discussion Searches for sources that pair the play with the emotional condition have proven difficult to find, though two useful ones did come up, including
an article by a Dr. Dinko Podrug who discusses the way in which he has approached psychiatric conditions by considering how the appear in literature. Well turn to him first,
then well discuss PTSD itself and see if Hamlet does indeed suffer from it. As he watched Hamlet, Podrug says, he was struck with the way in which the action
of the play "is ... propelled by the main characters systematic efforts to find out ... the hidden truth. They do this because events ... force them to start doubting
themselves and everybody and everything else that matters to them, and they must resolve their doubts" (Podrug). In order to do this, Podrug argues, the characters in the play react
to one anothers "speech and imputed feelings and designs" (Podrug). They often misunderstand and misinterpret each other (Podrug). (What Podrug is doing here is using literature-Hamlet, specifically-as a way of
teaching his students to understand therapist/patient relationships; he doesnt discuss Hamlet and PTSD directly but his observations are interesting.) He observes that watching fictional characters interact can often "speak more
directly to the psychiatrist-patient encounter" than the real thing, because the fiction is after all written by real people (Podrug). It is also a heightened situation. That is, we dont
