opens, we learn that King Hamlet has been dead for several months and his brother Claudius is King; not only that, but he has married King Hamlets widow, Gertrude. Prince
Hamlet has come home from school to mourn for his father and to spend some time at the court, and during that time his fathers ghost appears to him, tells
him he was murdered, and orders young Hamlet to avenge him. He also tells him that Claudius is the murderer. Oedipus is already king when his story starts. There
is a plague on Thebes, and Oedipus sends his brother-in-law Creon to the Oracle at Delphi to ask why theyre suffering and what can be done. Creon comes back and
says that the "pollution" on the land is a man, one who killed his father. It is now Oedipuss task to find him and drive him out. It is Oedipus
himself who is the murderer, but he doesnt know it, and he sets out to discover the killer, with disastrous results. There are certain similarities between the two. They are
both royalty, they have both been told by an outside agency to look for a murderer in their midst, and in both cases, the agency that delivered that message was
supernatural. Hamlet heard it from the ghost of his father while Oedipus heard it from the god Apollo, through his Oracle. But the differences are much more striking. First
of all, Hamlet knew and loved his father deeply. In fact, he hero-worshipped him, to the extent that when he confronts his mother, he describes King Hamlet as a god:
