But, even then one can see that Hamlet has some emotional struggles that could be, in the simplest sense, seen as a form of depression. The following paper examines the character of Hamlet from the perspective of mental illness. The paper examines Hamlet as a man suffering possibly from paranoid schizophrenia and then as a man suffering from melancholy, and then simply depression. Hamlet and Mental Illness In first examining the mental condition of Hamlet it is important to understand some of the characteristics and conditions of Hamlet. He is a man who has come home because his father has died. His father was the King and his mother seems to have immediately remarried to Hamlets uncle. Hamlet sees the ghost of his father who tells him that his step-father killed him. Hamlet is disgruntled that his mother remarried so quickly, and he is confused in relationship to the ghost and the ghosts demands that he seek revenge for the murder. The story revolves around Hamlets confusion about what to do and one can see that the man is very chaotic, regardless of mental illness. With this simple illustration in mind the first thing that one can argue is that Hamlet is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. One author indicates how "paranoid schizophrenia is marked by a preoccupation with delusions or by frequent auditory hallucinations related to a single theme, especially grandeur or persecution" (Coon 465).
