This paper comments on the way in which the two plays comment on a specific moral theme, and compares/contrasts the two. Discussion We want to look at these plays from
the authors viewpoints, which means discarding our 21st century sensibilities and going back 400 years to the society of the day. That means we have to consider things like
the importance of religion in everyday life, and the fact that society was very highly structured. What do we know about the plays? "Hamlet" is the story of a
young man, emotionally scarred by his fathers death, who returns home to find that his father was a murder victim and that it is up to him to take revenge.
"Dr. Faustus" is the ageless tale of a scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in return for vast knowledge. But what are Shakespeare and Marlowe really saying that
would comment on a moral theme? In "Hamlet," which is arguably the best and most popular play ever written, Shakespeare paints a detailed portrait of a complex and troubled young
man who returns to the court of his father only to find that father, King Hamlet, dead and his mother Gertrude remarried to his uncle Claudius. Then his fathers ghost
tells him that he was murdered, and that it is his (Hamlets) task to avenge his death: "If thou didst ever thy dear father love ... Revenge his foul and
most unnatural murther" (I, v, 23-25). But if that isnt shocking enough, King Hamlet goes on to tell him the identity of his killer: "The serpent that did sting
thy fathers life / Now wears his crown" (I, v, 38-39). Hamlet responds, "O my prophetic soul! / My uncle?" (I, v, 40-41). Thus begins his long road to the
