shed light on this topic as Hamlet indeed possesses attributes of both. However, in the end, the overwhelming evidence supports his sanity, despite the awful things he does.
Why Hamlet Was NOT Insane Many have questioned Hamlets sanity in Shakespeares tragedy, however much of the reason for this is
because many people find it difficult to attribute such horrible behaviors to sane people. We much prefer to think of people who do wrong instead of right as being
mentally insane since we cannot fathom a sane person choosing evil over good. However, the truth is that evil does exist in the world and people have just as
much opportunity to choose evil as they do to choose goodness. Therefore, making a conscious choice to choose evil does not necessarily make someone insane. Such a decision
may make person immoral, cowardly, or any number of other attributes, but it does not inherently make them insane. From the beginning of this play, Hamlet himself states that
he is perfectly sane when he says that he is going to act insane in order to get revenge upon Claudius (Hamlet - Insane or Not?). This alone is
telling of his character and reveals how cold and calculating he really is. A person who is indeed truly insane would not be able to make such an assertion
