2010 -- properly! William Shakespeares Hamlet is perhaps the most intensely analyzed and scrutinized character in the history
of Western literature. There are those who believe his fathers murder and mothers remarriage have rendered the Danish prince genuinely insane while others are convinced that Hamlets madness is
merely a contrivance to expose his uncle-turned-stepfather Claudius as the murderer of King Hamlet. There are others that believe Hamlets reckless and irrational behavior is rooted in his guilty
conscience because of his incestuous feelings towards his mother and his jealous over his father. If Hamlet was helplessly unbalanced or racked with guilt, that might make him a
sympathetic character in the eyes of audiences. However, if Hamlet was none of those things and simply a willful, spoiled, and completely self-centered young man who thought of no
one but himself, audiences will perceive him as anything but sympathetic. The clues that audiences receive regarding Hamlet and his true motives are received both directly and indirectly.
Hamlet has been involved with Ophelia for quite sometime, and it would appear the relationship was a sexual one. Ophelia, who lost her mother at an early age,
was brought up in a very sheltered environment, with her father Polonius - one of Claudius best friends and most trusted advisors - and her brother Laertes serving as her
protectors. Ophelia is innocent and na?ve about the world whereas Hamlet is sophisticated and manipulative. He does not return Ophelias unconditional love, and his treatment of her is
