As with most of Shakespeares prose, few have escaped the pore-examining scrutiny of critics over the years. Hamlet is no exception.
Thematically, some critics claim that it is the story of one mans abject, unavoidable degeneration. Others espouse a theme that is relevant not to Hamlets character, but to the
tragic, self-defeating nature of revenge. Still others believe that Hamlets theme depicts and underscores the over-intellectual idealist who is incapable of appropriate action in a world. This
essay sets out to examine a number of these opinions relevant to Shakespeares usage of theme in his critically acclaimed tragedy, Hamlet.
Simply put, a theme is what the play is about in the grandest sense. It is the whole point of the play, and what is left after distillation of
the piece. It can encompass everything from across-the-board generalizations about the nature of Man, his actions, his resultant lot in life, etc. or a combination of these. In
addition, (and not atypical of the Bard) Hamlet has more than one focus. For example, unquestionably the Prince of Denmark is one of the most complex characters in world
literature, and one persistent theme about which critics take issue has to do with Hamlet and his intrinsic, individualistic and single-minded nature. To some he is particularly controversial and
