seek vengeance for the murder of is father. Generally speaking, it is a story about men and their journeys. But, it is also a story wherein the main character has the love of two women, and thus is subtly influenced by these two women. The women are Hamlets mother and Ophelia, his supposed love. The following paper examines the story of Hamlet and discusses how, first off, his mother influences his thought patterns. Then the paper discusses the same in relationship to Ophelia. Hamlets Mother Hamlets mother is a woman who has been widowed and then marries her brother-in-law, making him the king. We are never sure if she is quite aware of the fact that her new husband was responsible for her previous husbands death, but Hamlet is fairly convinced that she knew. Hamlet loves his mother and this is perhaps what influences him the most in relationship to his mother and his quest for vengeance. She is his mother and while he has some doubts about her involvement in the entire murder of his father, he is also fairly convinced that she has some knowledge. He pushes her here and there trying to extract information from her, making subtle chides that seem insane to his mother. At last, however, he confronts her, all but begging her to see some truth: "My pulse, as yours, doth temperately keep time, And makes as healthful music: it is not madness That I have utterd: bring me to the test, And I the matter will re-word; which madness Would gambol from. Mother, for love of grace" (Shakespeare III iv). In this we see him pleading with her, pleas which seem to change her mind, in a way that indicates he hopes she had nothing to do with it. His ...
