A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares these three works. Three of the greatest tragic plays every written are "Oedipus" by Sophocles; "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare; and "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller. While these plays are vastly different, as their subject matter and their playwrights are separated by centuries, they also bear similarities. In each play, sexual relationships play a major role in motivating the action that propels the characters toward their tragic fate. Another factor is that these plays also exhibit similarities in structure, as they all follow the parameters of Aristotelian tragedy, as outlined by that ancient Greek philosopher in his treatise, "The Poetics." Lastly, but perhaps, most importantly, these plays relate aspects of the human condition, which is a factor that makes them timeless, as each new generation finds aspects of their own lives within cathartic dramatizations. aspects of their own lives within cathartic dramatizations. In "Oedipus Rex," Sophocles retells a myth that was well known to his contemporary audiences. Sexual relationships and the guilt and
intrigue that they entail are integral to the unfolding of the plot. For example, when Jocasta relates how Laius, her first husband, had their infant son killed, her grief and
remorse are quite evident. She tells Oedipus, "...my son/ he wasnt three days old and the boys father/fastened his ankles, had a henchman fling him away/on a barren, trackless mountain"
(lines 790-793). Likewise, it is his intense guilt for having committed incest with his mother that compels Oedipus in the plays climatic scene to take his own eyesight. In
"Hamlet," the troubled Danish prince is morose and troubled because, just a short time after his fathers death, his mother remarried and, worse of all, married her brother-in-law. Hamlet voices
his opinion of his mothers behavior by saying, "such a deed/ As from the body of contraction plucks/The very soul" (III.4.46-49). In "Death of a Salesman," illicit sexual relationship are
also evident and highly influential in that the audience learns that Biff became disillusioned and lost his football scholarship after finding out his father was having an affair. As
